Often, a square shaped jaw is due to the hyperactivity of the masseter (chewing) muscles. Frequent chewing of hard foods or grinding the teeth at night can cause the hypertrophy or overgrowth of these muscles. While often seen as an asset to a male’s appearance, a strong jaw on a female can be perceived as masculine. Reducing the size of the masseter muscles is achieved, over time, with the injection of muscle relaxants, giving a more feminine appearance.
Patients will be made to clench their jaw until the outline of the masseter muscles can be determined.
15-25 units of muscle relaxant is injected into each side of the jaw into the masseter in a series of injections.
The masseter will eventually reduce in size and give a slimmer appearance to the face.
When will I see results?
The masseter muscle is quite strong and takes longer than other muscles to relax and reduce in size. Results should be visible after a couple of months. Regular timely treatments will ensure the continued slimming effect of reduced masseters.
